The unit was installed in July 2009. The cooling worked fine. When I used the heat cycle last week, things went wrong. My whole house main circuit breaker started tripping, and the unit constantly cycles between heat and cooling. IOW, when the heat cycle brings the house to the target temperature, the cooling cycle immediately kicks in. When the cooling cycle brings the temperature down 2 degrees F, the heat cycle starts again. Endless loop! The repair person has been here twice. Once to replace my thermostat ($415), the 2nd time to replace the thermostat 2 more times (no charge). That hasn't solved the problem. It's the unit, not the thermostat, but they won't admit it. They are going to try again tomorrow, but I expect no solution. I wish I had replaced my 15 year old York with a York! Apparently, other customers have this same problem (I overheard some cell phone discussions by the repairman). I wonder how of those customers even know their heat pump isn't working properly, just constantly cycling back and forth between heating and cooling and running up their electrical bill? I'm going to keep fighting with the installer until they repair it or remove it!

My wife thinks this heat pump is okay but what does she know. I don't like it. My electric bill didn't change that much and its noisy.

We installed 2 Ruud system 3 years ago and from the very beginning one has given us problems. First, they replaced the thermostat with no change then a valve broke and we lost all the freon. They sad that if had I had a seasonal check-up this would have been avoided, This is "BULL", why do I need servicing on the first summer of a new unit? We continue to have a problem with the auxilary heat coming on, often cycling, and only on the one unit, the other one is not doing it. after repeated call from the installer, all we get is a big runaround about what really is the problem, needless to say they do not want to fix it (their cost) or admitt that something is wrong. I will not likely ever buy another, the cost of replacing the old one (25 years old) did not provide any savings.

Only one comment:
Ruud please send me a check in the amount of $4,250.00 & I will have this two ton piece of sheet metal (less than three years old) laying on the curb in a flash. My problems have been very close to the previous complaints.
Thank you, Very unhappy home owner.

I have a 12 year old RUUD heat pump system at my home in South Central TX. It was 6 years old when I bought the house, I have had minimal problems with it since. I have it serviced every 1-2 years and have replaced a few piece parts but nothing out of line for the system's age. I am shopping for a new unit and see no reason not to buy another RUUD (16 SEER installed for about $6K) vs other manufacturer's systems at 9K and up. Unless the quality has really crashed...but then the 10 year warranty will make up for the aggravation. smilies/wink.gif

I spent $10,000.00 on a RUUD heat pump, AC and electric furnace in Sept. In March a wire fried (over the freon) and shorted the unit. Aux. heat came on (I was in Europe) and the heat bill for March was over 150.00 more than it should have been because aux. was on. The unit was under warranty and they have refused to pay for the additional electricity it cost to heat my home, though they admit the problem was their problem!!! I will call again and if they still refuse, I will hang a sign on my fence that says DON'T BUY RUUD and don't use STURM!

My home is now 30 years old. When I was planning the home
I decided on heat pumps (2). Fairly new technology and minimal residential use at that time. I live in the high desert of NW New Mexico and the temp will fall below -5 to -15 ^F in the Winter. Needless to say heat pumps are in-efficient at those temps, BUT I am very satisfied with the Ruud units overall. My expense for 30 years has been to replace 1 compressor & 2 fans other than annual check-ups> I have leaks in the lines which cause the need for refrigerant refills. I am now planing replacement for these units and WILL get RUUD units for replacement. Of course SEER values have improved greatly in 3o years..so
I think I will recover some cost... GOOD JOB RUUD....

I had a new Ruud 5 ton heat pump unit installed and turned it on for three days and the compressor burned up- DON'T BUY RUDD or USE ROBERTSON'S Heating and Air to install it- they have horrible installers - I have been totally dissatisfied and feel comlpletely cheated.
